Kappa Rus JSC Moscow factory has set a new record — over 14 million square meters of product shipped.

In November 2023, Kappa Rus JSC Moscow factory broke all previous records since its inception — for the first time, customers received 14.1 million square meters of product within a month.

This marks a significant milestone for the factory in terms of production and sales volumes.

This achievement was the result of systematic efforts across all areas, including technology upgrades, productivity enhancement, staff training, equipment modernization, expansion of finished goods storage, and process optimization. Notable production advancements include the installation of a high-speed 4-color line for corrugated SRP packaging, the acquisition of a Gepfert rotary line, and a new tearing machine to improve perforation quality.

The company’s distinguishing feature is its unwavering commitment to product quality improvement and adherence to high international standards. In October, Kappa Rus JSC successfully got FSSC 22000 certification, enabling it to fulfill orders from food manufacturers with stringent hygiene standards.

This year, the 5S acronym evolved into a comprehensive project for the factory, based on the company’s corresponding operational standard. The 5S system is a method for organizing and optimizing the workspace, comprising five key steps: sorting, systematizing, maintaining cleanliness, standardizing, and improving. The objective of 5S is to boost work efficiency, minimize time and resource wastage, and improve safety and working conditions. For instance, workspace reorganization was carried out on one of the pilot sites — the Tanabe JD BoxR multipoint gluing machine. This led to an 18% reduction in total downtime and a 40% decrease in average setup time.

Maxim Chekavinsky, Director of Sales and Marketing, comments, “Kappa Rus JSC is committed to continuous development. Every record we break is our motivation to evolve and continually enhance our operations to meet the increasing market demands and our customers’ expectations. We take pride in our accomplishments and want to thank all our customers for their trust and fruitful collaboration.”

Vladimir Shestakov, Managing Director for Moscow, comments, “Behind every achievement that sets a new record is a large team. I would like to extend my gratitude to all the employees for the outstanding performance in terms of shipment volumes and the tremendous work they have put in. The Moscow factory’s record of over 14 million square meters is a significant accomplishment. This figure has been reached for the first time in the factory’s history, making this achievement all the more valuable.”

The fourth Kappa Rus conference in Russia, titled ‘Packaging in the New Reality’, took place at the Royal Beach in St. Petersburg on September 8. The conference was attended by over 150 customers from 80 companies.

At the opening of the event, Kappa Rus Director Olga Rudova welcomed the guests and talked about the continuity of past conferences held in 2015, 2017, and 2019. She also spoke about the company’s rebranding and commitment to key principles: understanding the current needs of customers, dedication to solving their problems, and applying knowledge and experience for the maximum benefit of the customers’ businesses.

Kirill Mostolygin, Kappa Rus’s Innovation and Development Manager, showcased how modern packaging, despite its external resemblance to last century’s samples, differs from its predecessors. He also discussed how modern technologies and trends are reflected in packaging and the company’s approach to developing contemporary solutions that consider the important demands of the new reality.

Traditional presentations of successful projects implemented by Kappa Rus in collaboration with the customers became a major event of the conference. These presentations covered various aspects such as creative marketing approaches (Dodo Pizza), online commerce (Splat), eco-friendly solutions trend (Enervik), optimisation projects (Jacobs, Avangard), and import substitution (Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill).

The conference’s special guest was the master of the popular intellectual TV show with a 48-year history ‘What? Where? When?’. Alexander Druz, a six-time Crystal Owl and Diamond Owl winner, shared his experience of effective teamwork and decision-making under conditions of uncertainty and tight timeframes.

Guest speaker Stefan Doorslaer, President of the Alers Group, President of the Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in Russia and Belarus, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the St. Petersburg International Business Association (SPIBA), gave a talk on how businesses can cope with uncertainty.

The event included traditional interactive sessions. At the ‘Retail’ station, participants were offered a task of assembling their own shelf and evaluating the positioning of products on it. The ‘Marketing’ session immersed participants in a virtual world, providing a practical opportunity to track a customer’s gaze on the shelf using EYE tracking technology. The ‘Online commerce’ session allowed participants to package a product and test its durability using readily available tools. The ‘Production’ and ‘Chain of Custody’ sessions discussed interesting technological aspects such as printing, stamp products, gluing, and the importance of choosing the right methods of palletising, as well as their overall impact on logistics. The final ‘Ecology’ session was an environmental quiz that included questions about the environmental impact of packaging components.

The conference concluded with a gala dinner where customer companies were awarded for their active and successful implementation of projects in various market segments in collaboration with Kappa Rus. Awards were presented to Dodobrands, Avangard, Jacobs Dow Egberts Rus, Enervik, Splat Global, and Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill.

Summing up the event, Vladimir Shestakov, Managing Director of Kappa Rus in Moscow, noted, ‘This is the fourth time we have held the conference in Russia. We trust that once again, our presentations and interactive sessions have sparked inspiration in our customers for new designs and unique ideas for present and future packaging solutions.’

Maxim Chekavinsky, the Sales and Marketing Director of Kappa Rus, shared his impressions from interacting with the conference attendees: ‘The event’s incredible atmosphere, comprehensive program, and the high level of engagement of all participants fostered business communication. Receiving glowing reviews from customers is always gratifying. We appreciate everyone’s participation in the conference, as well as your kind words, and eagerly anticipate seeing you at our future events.’

What is ISTA?

ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) is an international safe transportation association, a non-profit organization that helps its members minimize product damage throughout the supply chain and optimize resource use by improving the efficiency of packaging solutions.

ISTA develops standards for packaging solutions to ensure the safe delivery of package contents and certifies laboratories to ensure that all facilities are properly equipped to perform pre-shipment testing of packaged products in accordance with ISTA standards.

What is an ISTA laboratory?

The ISTA laboratory is certified to perform pre-shipment testing using the required test equipment that has been properly installed and regularly maintained. This equipment must be operated by personnel capable of testing packaged products in accordance with ISTA® test designs and procedures, evaluating results, and completing and submitting test report forms at certified laboratories.

The ability to access ISTA laboratories is invaluable for companies whose supply chains suffer from packaging problems, as such laboratories help to minimize damage to products through rigorous packaging testing. The laboratory tests for many inherent hazards in the transportation process that many manufacturers may not be aware of, and those who do may not be able to perform the necessary tests themselves.

ISTA Test Types

In fact, there are a number of ISTA tests that vary depending on the level of certification you are applying for.

Series 1: Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests

Tests to evaluate the strength and reliability of the combination of product and packaging. Not designed to simulate environmental phenomena.

Series 2: Partial Simulation Performance Tests

Testing using at least one Series 3 test element (“Basic Simulation Performance Test”), such as atmospheric or random vibration simulation, in addition to the basic non-simulation integrity test elements from Series 1.

Series 3: Performance Tests with Basic Simulation

This series of tests is intended for laboratory simulation of the main damaging movements, forces, conditions and sequences of actions specific to transportation. The tests are applicable to a wide range of circumstances, including different types of vehicles and routes, as well as a different number of cargo handling stages. The impacts will include simple random vibrations, drops from various heights applied to packaging samples, and/or modeling of the effects of atmospheric conditions.

Series 4: Performance Tests with Enhanced Simulation

Basic simulation tests that include at least one purposeful simulation element, such as a sequence or test conditions associated with an actually known distribution.

Series 5: Recommendations for Purposeful Modeling

Recommendations for creating laboratory models based on actually measured and observed hazards in the field and their levels. Series 5 is not performance testing per se, but information and guidance related to creating user-defined tests based on targeted simulations.

Series 7. Tests at the development stage.

These tests are carried out at the stage of development of transport packaging. They can be used to compare the performance of two or more packaging options, but are not intended to evaluate the effectiveness of packaged product protection.

To understand which test options best suit your needs, check out the ISTA Test Selection Guide or contact one of our ISTA packaging testing experts using the form below.

What are the benefits of packaging testing according to ISTA standards?

One of the most important benefits of ISTA certification is the confidence it instills in customers: they know that the packaging has been rigorously tested to exacting standards and therefore will not damage their reputation. ISTA certification is often required by large retailers such as Amazon. In addition, it is a guarantee of minimizing damage from transportation and, accordingly, loss of products and customers.

Manufacturers get several benefits at once:

Product protection

Cost savings

Increasing brand loyalty

Increasing customer satisfaction

Minimize the need for trial deliveries.

The Russian division of the Smurfit Kappa Group became the winner of the 17th International Competition for the Best Packaging and Label for Food, Perfume, Cosmetics and Drinks ProdExtraPack-2022, which was held as part of the Prodexpo 2022 exhibition. The awards were given to three packaging solutions developed by the company’s designers.

In the Packaging Innovation nomination, a corrugated cardboard handle for a promotional set, developed for Procter & Gamble, was awarded. It is designed for tying two bottles of detergent and is not inferior in strength to a plastic counterpart. The design of the handle consists of one part, which is assembled with a lock without glue and can withstand the weight of two bottles of 2600 ml. It also has space for multicolor printing.

In the “Transport Container” nomination, the award was given to a universal e-commerce box with anti-vandal locks, developed for Unilever. Thanks to the design with internal locking elements, the package is suitable for sending products of different sizes, which reduces the number of package sizes in the company’s portfolio. The box has an anti-vandal lock that does not allow opening the package without breaking the integrity. The closure also eliminates the need for adhesive tape, meeting Unilever’s requirements for sustainable packaging.

And in the nomination “Packaging for food products and drinks” was awarded a show-box with a latch, designed for the Mondelez company. It is designed for transporting products and their subsequent display on the shelf. To ensure that the protruding elements of flat cardboard do not wrinkle during transportation, the design of the show box is provided with a retainer with cutouts, which includes all the protruding elements. The latch is one of the design valves, which avoids additional consumption of corrugated cardboard. After opening the show box, the fixative can be removed along the perforation.

Commenting on the victory in the competition, Olga Rudova, Managing Director for the North-West, noted: “It is a great honor for us to be awarded again at ProdExtraPack. We develop all packaging solutions together with our customers, striving to combine innovation, functionality and compliance with the highest environmental standards.”

In recent years, the e-commerce market has grown significantly, as has the growing and selling flower industry. Recently, demand and consumer trends have changed.
Growing market for flowers sold in e-commerce stores

The European market for fresh cut flowers and potted plants is estimated to be around 27 million euros. The largest sales channels are the markets of Germany, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the market as a whole, but e-commerce stores have only benefited from it. The size of the European e-commerce market in all sectors of the economy in 2021 grew by 17% compared to 2020, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming years. Online sales in the flower and houseplant market have not been around for very long, but are becoming increasingly important for businesses in this sector of the economy.

E-commerce as a retail sales channel in this sector accounts for less than 10% of sales. And in Europe, the figures vary significantly. However, this figure is expected to increase by 30% by 2027. There are two main motives for buying fresh cut flowers and potted plants, and these will only be strengthened by the exceptional convenience of online shopping and the ability of e-commerce stores to reach out directly to the buyer.

The gift goods market is of key importance for companies selling fresh cut flowers. It accounts for 40 to 70% of sales, depending on the specific country. Basically, the purchase of flowers is associated with various important occasions and memorable events, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc.

Buying flowers for personal use is another main motive for buying in this industry. And recently, there has been an increase in the number of companies offering a subscription-based delivery model to meet this demand. Subscription flower purchasing models provide convenience to customers as fresh flowers are delivered directly to their homes on a regular basis.

The main retail channels for fresh cut flowers and potted plants are street markets, flower shops, online retailers and online retailers. Some of the reasons why shoppers prefer colors from e-commerce stores include:

Convenience. Online shopping for any product provides more convenience than traditional stores. Consumers can instantly access a huge range of products, compare prices and shop at their convenience, at the time and place that suits them.

Audience. We are seeing a change in the type of buyers who buy flowers, and today’s audience prefers online shopping. The main audience is the generation of two thousandths, there is activity on the part of older people who have mastered digital technologies. It also boosts online sales.

COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced consumers to spend more time at home and actively use online shopping. The business was forced to adjust its sales model and start offering solutions directly to buyers of products such as flowers and houseplants.

Key recommendations for flower packaging solutions for e-commerce stores

Packaging plays an incredibly important role in the online market for cut flowers and potted plants. It must provide maximum protection to keep the flowers in their original condition during transport, as well as create an unforgettable unpacking experience. The right flower packaging solutions designed for e-commerce stores add value and open up new business opportunities. Key features of flower packaging solutions designed for e-commerce stores include the following:

Prompt delivery. Flowers quickly lose their marketability, so fast delivery is a must for this industry. Customers want to receive their orders quickly, and if fast delivery is not ensured, flowers will arrive stale. Companies that can offer same-day delivery can use this advantage as a major selling point, and in some cases consumers are willing to pay extra for this kind of convenience. Recently, there has been an increase in popularity of packaging in the form of an envelope with the ability to transfer to the client through the mailbox, which guarantees successful delivery the first time, even if the recipient of the order is not at home. Such packaging solutions will be especially useful for companies during peak periods of demand, such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. The right packaging can improve efficiency on busy days. For this, companies can use boxes that are assembled manually or automatically.

Reliable protection, high quality and freshness of delivered flowers. The Smurfit Kappa Consumer Preference Survey found that over 80% of consumers expect their orders to be delivered to their door in perfect condition. Using packaging that provides 100% protection for flowers and potted plants is critical, especially given the fragility of these products. Many online flower shops offer to add additional gifts to the flowers, such as wine and chocolate, so the packaging must ensure the safety of all these goods during transportation. Smurfit Kappa offers a wide range of packaging solutions to securely transport flowers, potted plants and related products. We can carry out extensive testing to ensure that the packaging is fit for purpose.

Environmental friendliness. Sustainability is key to all packaging today, and this also applies to flower packaging solutions for e-commerce stores. Our research shows that 89% of consumers are dissatisfied with the amount of waste associated with shopping, and 71% of consumers said that packaging in which goods are delivered should be easily recycled. We can provide packaging exactly to the specific dimensions of your products. In addition, our packaging solutions are made from 100% recyclable materials.

Customer experience and ample opportunities for personalization. Packaging is the most important point of interaction with customers, and if done right, it can help build brand loyalty. Since flower sales are often associated with gifts and special occasions, the unboxing experience is very important and should be memorable. A Smurfit Kappa study found that 85% of consumers value easy opening of packaging, so doing so can help create a positive brand experience. Consider using personalized boxes for different occasions to make an even bigger impact. You can create captions and designs that suit each occasion, or add special messages to the packaging for important holidays like Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, etc. Think of additional opportunities to increase sales, such as organizing cross-selling using QR codes. These options can be used to offer additional items at a special price or provide a discount on your next order.

Subscription based model. Subscription flower services are becoming more and more popular, and the right packaging for such a model is critical. Delivery of such orders should be quick and easy, so packaging in the form of an envelope with the possibility of transfer to the client through the mailbox is perfect here. It is also important to choose packaging that your packaging team can easily and easily assemble. This will help optimize the performance of your company. Properly selected packaging will help create an unforgettable experience for customers, which means increasing customer loyalty. If you deliver quality products efficiently and deliver a great unboxing experience, customers will keep coming back to you.

The market for subscription-based products has grown significantly over the past few years. More and more customers are discovering the benefits of home delivery. From beauty products to flowers and gifts, from pet products to alcohol, a growing number of industries are actively adopting a delivery model that has proven to be highly lucrative.

According to research by IMARC, in 2020, the delivery goods market generated $18.8 billion in revenue and is projected to increase by 20.1% annually between 2021 and 2026. For subscription products, packaging is very important, because it is what buyers form the first impression of your products. What’s more, well-designed packaging will help keep shipping costs as low as possible and meet all marketplace requirements, including Amazon certification requirements and package size requirements for local and international delivery services. In this guide, we will detail what you need to know about packaging for items sold online.

There are three types of packaging for subscription products

Companies that provide subscription services may have different business models and different end goals, so you need to decide on the type of service you offer before moving on to choosing the best packaging option. There are three main types of subscription services:

Curation subscription. When a customer purchases this type of subscription, he does not know what he will receive, and the contents of the package will be a small but pleasant surprise for him. Typically, products are selected based on customer preferences, and this subscription option is often used by food, beauty, and apparel companies. Examples of this kind of subscription are Hello Fresh and Stitch Fix.

Replenishment subscription. This type of subscription allows customers to restock items they use regularly and save time and money in the process. This is a common subscription option for companies that sell everyday products such as vitamins or razor blades. Amazon offers this service for certain products. Thus, customers receive this or that product regularly, every month.

Access-based subscription. Access-based subscriptions provide customers with exclusive access to certain products or benefits that they cannot access otherwise. This type of subscription is actively used by clothing and food brands such as NatureBox and JustFab.

Which markets are actively using packaging for subscription products?

Subscription packaging is used across a wide range of industries and offers a range of benefits not only to businesses but also to consumers. From a value-for-money point of view, packaging for subscription products is a cost-effective solution to increase brand awareness without having to display the product in the store. Here are some examples of sectors of the economy that are actively using packaging for goods delivered by subscription:

fashion brands, including clothing, accessories and style;

beauty and grooming industry;

food and beverage companies, especially specialty food products such as farm food or craft drinks;

educational service providers that offer textbooks and kits for children’s art;

pet product brands, including dog food, treats and toys;

subscriptions to fitness products, healthy food, or fitness accessories.

Why is subscription packaging important?

The subscription market is a lucrative business and is therefore highly competitive. To succeed in this direction, companies need to have a loyal customer base and offer them products that really make their lives better. Buyers can quickly unsubscribe if they are not satisfied with the products offered. The study showed that the main reasons for canceling a subscription are dissatisfaction with a product or service and the unjustified purchase of a particular product.

On the other hand, customers like this service because they enjoy the unexpected surprise. In this case, the goods are delivered directly to their home. It is very important to make a vivid impression on your subscribers so that they stay with you for a long time. Carefully thought-out packaging is very important in order to make a positive impression on customers that they will remember for a long time. When your package is delivered to the customer, the package should make the same unforgettable impression as what is inside it.

The purpose of packaging for subscription products is to increase brand loyalty, and if certain conditions are met, this can be easily achieved. Loyalty can only be earned with high quality standards, and many customers have higher requirements for subscription-based services. As such, the return process for subscription-delivered products should be as simple as possible, and proper packaging plays an important role in this process.

Is your subscription package truly satisfying to your customers?

The main goal of subscription products is to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction, and your packaging should contribute to this. This is your chance to impress your customers by giving them an experience they will remember. Thanks to this, they will look forward to your package every month (or on a predetermined regular basis). Your packaging should make an impression on its own. This can be achieved with the help of an original packaging design, interesting printing or a special thank-you card. The process of unpacking a package should increase the anticipation of seeing its contents, so your packaging should not just be a faceless shipping box – it should stand out for its originality.

Six Essential Packaging Requirements for Subscription Items

When designing your packaging for subscription products, you need to pay attention to the following points:

1. Packaging is a means of expressing your brand. Your packaging is a means of expressing your brand and making your subscription services stand out from the competition. Make sure that even the smallest detail of your packaging reflects the image of your brand.

2. Original packaging, photos of which can be published on social networks. Customers love sharing what’s new on social media, and your packaging should make them want to post pictures of it online. Subscription shipping packaging can make a big statement and help increase your brand awareness. In addition, the use of QR codes has increased significantly in recent months, with more brands starting to use them to communicate digitally with customers through packaging. Consider putting a QR code on your packaging for contests, games, or digital features that further support your brand. In this way, you will be able to receive data about the behavior of your buyers in real time.

3. Environmental friendliness. More and more buyers are taking sustainability into account when making purchasing decisions. Make sure your packaging is sustainable, and shoppers are more likely to choose your brand over companies that don’t care about the environment. Learn more about the role sustainability of packaging plays in your purchasing decision here. However, just having sustainable packaging is not enough. This information must also be communicated to your customers. Make sure your packaging communicates to consumers that it is sustainable and consider including information on how to recycle it.

4. Optimal shipping cost. Your packaging must be suitable for shipping to customers on a regular basis. Design postal packaging that meets the requirements and recommendations of delivery services. This will ensure that your goods will be delivered to customers safe and sound.

5. Reliable protection of the contents of the package. Your packaging must provide the necessary level of protection to eliminate any risk of damage to the goods in transit and ensure that the goods arrive in perfect condition. For packages that carry expensive goods, consider using an ISTA-certified packaging supplier. It can perform a detailed check on the reliability of your packaging through a series of tests that simulate real-life shipping conditions.

6. Easy opening of the package. Your customers want to open the packaging as quickly as possible in order to immediately receive positive emotions from the purchased goods. Make sure your package can be opened without scissors. Instead, the package can be sealed with a tear tape or zip fastener. One of the mistakes that companies often make is that customers do not know how to open the packaging easily and simply. Post instructions for opening the package so that customers can immediately understand how to open it.

We at Smurfit Kappa have been offering subscription packaging to companies for many years. Our experts can help you create packaging that creates the right thoughts and feelings about your brand, maximizes customer satisfaction, and meets the demands of shipping companies or marketplaces like Amazon.
